People often ask where the name “Shady Brady” came from. It all started in ‘77 when a few who lived in the Anthon & Smithland area at the time, decided to start up an inactive saddle club. Horse shows, trailrides, BBQ’s and dances were the ‘mane’ events. But with the horse shows barely making money, being too much work and never enough help, it was decided to just ride the trails. There are still four of the original families as members. When a group in that area wanted their saddle club name back, and with most of the members having moved out of that area, the name ‘Siouxland Shady Brady’ was decided on.

“Siouxland”, because members were not from any one town. In fact past members have been from Correctionville, Anthon, Holstein, LeMars, Mapleton, Moorhead, Charter Oak, Castana, Smithland, Pierson, Kingsley, Moville, Merrill, Soldier, Hinton, Akron, Westfield, Whiting, Onawa, Schleswig, Sloan, Salix, Hornick, Sioux City, Orange City, Spirit Lake, Sergeant Bluff, Lawton, Ankeny, Cherokee, Hawarden, Bronson, Coralville, Danbury, Alton, Ute, Charter Oak, Defiance, Council Bluffs, Spirit Lake; South Sioux City, Winnebago, & Allen, Nebraska; Jefferson, Elk Point, Volin,       &  North Sioux City, South Dakota with a long distance member from Salem, Illinois.

“Shady Brady”, not because the club is shady, but because Shady Brady is an older style of cowboy hat. Membership fluctuates every year but as many as 150 members have been in the yearly membership. You are not required to be a member to ride on one of the many trailrides each year. But if you’re not a member you’ll not get the newsletter to tell you when and where the next ones are and to keep you up-to-date on events in our area (excluding horse shows). Dues are $5 per year for single people and for families $10 per year. This covers the copying and postage costs for the newsletter.

Last year approximately 15 trailrides were held. At some of those camping was also done. Every year a Memorial and Labor Day Ride and Camp is held. The annual Christmas Party is held in January. Our biggest ride can sometimes involve up to 45 horses with riders with the smallest ride sometimes being only five members. So load up your horse and come ride with us!
